Semper describes this cloth as a type of taffeta worn in the 9th century and associated with Reims. This sounds a little unlikely since Reims in the Middle Ages was famous for its linen production and not for silks. He further specifies that this fabric was used mainly for linings or for light clothing popular in Italy, and that in his day it had gone out of fashion everywhere except in England where he states it to have been manufactured since the Middle Ages under the names of "Pfawin" or "fown" (vol. 1, ed. 1, p. 176). Further research is required.
